In search of the tribes: Welcome to northern Kenya, home of the world's worst roads. It takes a lot to top the potholed disaster zone that ran from the Thai boarder to Cambodia's Siem Reap 13 years ago in the height of the monsoon season, but northern Kenya claims that prize. Tracking down the tribes was exhausting and frustrating work, at times the journey was dangerous. But whether hitching on top of trucks in search of the Samburu, trekking across dry arid tundra to the Turkana, or descending down mountainsides to pursue the Pokot, my days were never dull. And in the end the Pokot, most feared of tribes, the people I'd been warned about, turned out to be the friendliest of them all...
